How Gate Operators Work?

There are different gates that are fitted with mechanized controls for opening and closing gates remotely. The devices that help to open and close gates remotely or through mechanized means are called gate operators. The devices are usually electrically powered, either through batteries or when connected through a main power grid. Gate operators usually get configured as per the gate type, duty cycle and size. There are four main types – slide, swing, lift and trolley designs. Each gate type is fitted or meant for different operations. Most gate operators with a gate lock mechanism either work through a remote control fitted with a key fob or as a central console, which is common in parking garages where card systems are in vogue.

Main uses

The gate operators with gate lock are usually installed in areas where security is a requirement. This includes residential premises as well as commercial or office premises. Usually they are installed in garages or parking lots in order to control the security features, providing access as well as egress control. The automated gates fitted with gate motor bracket usually provide convenience to facility operators, as well as for those who are driving in or out, like an automobile or bike drivers.

How they work

Usually gate operators are fitted with gate motor bracket which is powered in different ways. The gates might be fitted with a connection to a main power grid or could be powered by a battery. The battery is then connected to the mains power outlet or is powered by solar cells. The gates are controlled by infrared based radio transmitters which work through remote controls. There is a central point of control, or some gates are fitted with card readers.

Different kinds of gates

Gates can be of different kinds. They could be sliding, swinging, lifting or trolley type gates. The gate operators for lift gates usually have a vertically operating mechanism. These are common in parking lots. Usually these gates open by inserting a parking card or a ticket in the reader that is located by the doors or barriers. Slide gates usually are found in complexes that have a high level of security. Here the gates are one piece designs where the operators consist of a rack and pinion gear mechanism. The pinion gear works with a motor where a rack gear is attached to the gate which needs to be operated. Swing operators usually have two motors for two side gates. The trolley gates are usually linked with a hinged mechanism which pulls the door aside on a trolley track as per remote control. Some doors are fitted with sensors so that the opening and closing happens as objects are sensed to be close to it or have passed it. Usually the gates that are connected to main grids have a backup power system as well, so that the automated mechanism continues to run even in power cut situations.
