Anupama Chopra is a famous Indian film critic, author and journalist. She is a film critic for NDTV, India Today and The Hindustan Times. She also played host for a show based on film reviews called “The Front Row with Anupama Chopra” on the Star World. Anupama Chopra has done her MA in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Anupama Chopra had been a huge fan of Indian Cinema, especially Bollywood. She chose to become a film critic at a time when that kind of work was considered to be rather unconventional, unappealing and non-lucrative.
Anupama Chopra is the wife of famous film director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Her mother Kamna Chandra is also loosely related to the film industry. She was a scriptwriter and had written dialogues for films such as Prem Rog, which was released in 1982 and Chandni which was released in the year 1989.
Anupama Chopra has also written several books on Indian cinema with her primary focus revolving around Bollywood. Her first book – Sholay: The Making of a Classic got her the 2000 National Film Award for Best Book on Indian Cinema. She has also written a book on the film Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayenge, which incidentally was the only movie which ran for a number of weeks than Sholay. The British Film Institute started a modern classics series, which had a collection of the details about the making of classics all over the world. As a part of the series, the book on Dilwale Dulhania Lejayenge was published in the year 2002 by the British Film Institute.
Anupama Chopra has her share of criticisms too. Many in the industry and also among the public feel that her reviews are biased and most of the films for which she has given about 3 or 3.5 stars do not deserve that rating at all. There are also people who think that good films have not been given good ratings. There has been criticism from several quarters that she favors the films of only those stars that have appeared in her shows. However, despite the criticisms, Anupama Chopra is today one of the leading film critics in India and her ratings do have an impact on the collections of films.
